Cookie Policy
Last updated: 2026-05-27
1. Scope
This Cookie Policy explains the cookies and similar technologies used on boardgameguru.org. It supplements our Privacy Policy.
"Cookies and similar technologies" includes:
- Cookies — small text files stored by your browser.
localStorage/sessionStorage— browser storage areas read and written by the site.- Pixels and beacons that our service providers may use. We do not use advertising pixels.
Under EU and UK ePrivacy law, storing or accessing information on your device requires your consent — unless it is strictly necessary to deliver a service you asked for.
2. Categories we use
| Category | Purpose | Examples | Consent required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Keep you signed in; protect against abuse; keep the cart of an in-flight action straight. | Session cookies set by our authentication provider; a short-lived response cache. | No |
| Functional | Remember a preference you set — for example, your anonymous chat history on a game page. | A per-game chat-history key in your browser's storage. | No (legitimate interest) |
| Analytics + session replay | Understand how the assistant is used so we can improve it. Includes a video-like replay of how you interacted with the page. | Set by our analytics and session-replay provider. | Yes |
Specific named cookies, providers, and retention periods are available on request from privacy@boardgameguru.org.
3. Session replay — what it captures
Our analytics and session-replay provider produces a video-like reconstruction of how you interacted with the page. In the current build this includes the characters you type into form fields, including the chat assistant, the search bar, and your profile fields.
We capture this level of detail because the product is early-stage and watching real users interact with the assistant is how we find rough edges. We will narrow the capture surface as the product matures.
What we already do to protect you:
- Password fields are masked automatically by your browser; we do not see what you type into them.
- No recording starts until you have accepted in our cookie banner. If you reject, no capture occurs.
- Replays expire 12 months after capture and are then deleted.
- Replays are only linked to your account after you sign in. Pre-login activity is recorded against a pseudonymous browser ID.
- No advertising, no third-party sharing, no sale.
- You can ask us to delete your replays at any time by emailing privacy@boardgameguru.org.
If you would prefer to use the site without any session replay, click "Reject non-essential" in the cookie banner, or revoke consent later via "Cookie preferences" in the footer.
4. How to control them
In our consent banner. First-visit banner lets you accept or reject the consent-required categories. Change your choice anytime via "Cookie preferences" in the footer.
In your browser. Each major browser lets you block or clear cookies and browser storage. Look for "Privacy" or "Site data" in your browser's settings.
Global Privacy Control. We honour the GPC signal as a request to opt out of analytics and session replay, consistent with CCPA/CPRA expectations. We do not respond to the legacy Do Not Track header — there is no agreed standard for it.
5. How to change your mind
Your choice in the cookie banner is not permanent.
- Click "Cookie preferences" in the footer of any page — the banner reopens with your current settings.
- Email privacy@boardgameguru.org with subject line "Delete my analytics data" to purge what we already hold. We will action within 30 days.
- Install a browser extension that blocks our analytics endpoints — this will stop all events and replays for you at the network level.
6. Changes
We will update this Cookie Policy when our use of cookies and similar technologies changes. The "Last updated" date at the top tells you when.
